Chris Boot

Chris Boot is an independent photography editor based in London. Before becoming an independent professional, he served as Executive Director of the nonprofit publisher Aperture in New York from 2011 to 2021. Prior to that, he founded and directed his own publishing house, Chris Boot Ltd, where he produced more than fifty photobooks. Among these were the ICP Infinity Award–winning Lodz Ghetto Album (2004) and Things as They Are: Photojournalism in Context Since 1955 (2005), both widely recognized for their contribution to the history and discourse of photography.
Boot’s career in photography began in community activism and education, shaping his commitment to accessibility and public engagement with the medium. He has held key leadership positions in the field, including serving as Director of Magnum Photos in both London and New York.
He is also the author and editor of Magnum Stories (Phaidon, 2004), a landmark publication exploring the creative and ethical dimensions of documentary photography through the voices and images of Magnum’s photographers.
